Boots has started recruiting for 6,000 seasonal roles across the UK this Christmas, spanning its 1,800 high street stores, warehouses and its customer support centre.

The retailer, which employs more than 50,000 people and is headquartered in Nottingham, says the flexible and part-time positions are open to candidates of all ages — including young people and first-time jobseekers, who typically account for around half of its seasonal recruits.

Donna Hodgins, director of talent acquisition at Boots, said: "For many people, the festive season can be the perfect opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience, build confidence and develop skills that will support them throughout their careers."

She added: "These roles provide hands-on experience in customer service, operations and teamwork, and for many people can be the first step on a longer-term career journey with Boots."

What roles are on offer?

The seasonal vacancies fall into three broad categories across the nationwide estate:

  • Customer advisers and operations assistants in stores
  • Warehouse operatives and "picker packers" who fill shelves and process online orders
  • Customer support roles handling queries during peak season

Seasonal employees receive a competitive hourly rate, a colleague discount and access to benefits including savings on cinema tickets and holidays. Boots did not disclose the specific hourly pay figure.

What does the timing signal?

The hiring drive lands at a moment of ownership change. Canada's Weston family, which previously owned London's Selfridges department store, has acquired the pharmacy and beauty retailer for $8.9bn (£6.74bn) in a deal announced yesterday.

Wittington Investments, the Weston family's holding company — which runs the Loblaws grocery chain and Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacies in Canada — will take over Boots' UK and Ireland retail stores, its chain of opticians, and the No7 beauty brand.

Galen Weston, chairman of Wittington Investments, said: "We see a meaningful opportunity to make a great business even better through stable long-term ownership, further capital investment, and the renewed operating focus required to serve customers with excellence for generations to come."

Weston also called Boots "one of Britain's most enduring businesses, with a rich heritage, a trusted name and a vital role in everyday life across the UK and Ireland".

What it means for jobseekers

For first-time applicants, the odds are structurally favourable: roughly half of Boots' seasonal intake has historically come from people with no prior workplace track record. That makes the Christmas intake one of the most accessible entry points into large-employer employment in UK retail, in roles that Boots itself frames as a potential route into longer-term positions.

For candidates weighing options across the sector, Boots' 6,000 openings sit alongside comparable drives elsewhere: Sainsbury's and Argos have announced 17,500 seasonal roles, and Currys plans to hire 1,000 temps with half of those positions turning permanent.

With the Weston family pledging capital investment and long-term stability, the seasonal intake arrives under new owners who have signalled expansion rather than retrenchment — a signal worth watching for anyone hoping a temporary Christmas contract converts into a permanent one.
